We only hire students who have a degree in a technical or scientific discipline and who have a law school grade point average of at least 3.0. Our summer program is flexible and we welcome our summer associates to join us for any portion of the summer.
The most important criteria used in deciding whether to promote an associate to the partnership include the associate’s ability and desire to work well with others, to develop business, to exercise good judgment, and to demonstrate a commitment to the firm as reflected by the associate’s quality of work and financial performance. We generally consider associates for partnership after they have been out of law school for approximately 8-10 years and with the firm for at least 3 years.
Patent agents and technical advisors are non-attorney patent practitioners with degrees in technical or scientific disciplines. These practitioners are playing an increasingly vital role in the growth and long-term success of all technical practice areas in our firm. Although we prefer candidates with advanced degrees, we also consider well-credentialed candidates with bachelor’s degrees. In addition, we interview candidates who are still in the process of earning advanced degrees.
Our compensation structure incentivizes attorneys to work hard, to work efficiently, and to produce a top-quality product. Compensation generally includes a base salary, a discretionary end-of-year bonus, and a formula-style bonus that is based on the associate’s financial performance. We also include usual benefits, such as paid parking and insurance. We’re particularly proud of our 401k matching program, which is not frequently offered by other firms. Under this program, the firm generally matches 55% of each employee’s annual pre-tax 401k contributions. Under our compensation structure, many associates can and do earn in excess of what they may earn at large firms for the same number of hours worked.

Position Objective: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for the firm’s day to day operational functions, reporting to the firm Management Committee. Ideally, the candidate will have proven executive level leadership experience in a law firm or professional services setting. The candidate will play a crucial role in steering the strategic direction of the firm, providing leadership and guidance in the management and growth of the firm.
Financial Management: Work closely with the firm Management Committee to develop and execute strategies aimed at profitability and operational financial health. Oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and accounting providing insight to better inform decision making.
Operational Management: Evaluate, recommend, and implement processes aimed at improving technology (IT), marketing, and professional administrative support including accounting, finance, human resources, and docketing. Work with firms pension plan group and serve as plan administrator.
Business Development/Marketing: Work with the Director of Business Development and Marketing on strategies targeting revenue growth, client retention, and firm branding.
Compliance and Risk Management: Work with firms insurance brokers to secure competitive liability and malpractice insurance and employee health insurance.
Effective Communication: Ability to communicate financial and operational information effectively to firm management. Promote a culture of teamwork, professionalism, accountability across all firm levels.
Experience: Minimum of 10 years of executive level experience in a law firm or professional services firm. Proven ability to lead by example, build and manage relationships among all levels. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; high attention to detail. Bachelor’s degree is required; (MBA or equivalent) is preferred.
